On Growing Up… with Disney

So, I was one of the kids that grew up in front of the television and watched Disney movies and shows all day. Yes, I was that kind of kid. I wasn’t a picky kid, I also watched Nickelodeon and Cartoon network, though both networks haven’t made movies yet. Or if they did, well, I didn’t know about it.

As every little girl does, I dreamed of becoming a princess, a dragon, a cross-dressing warrior or a dropping in a hole in the ground hoping to lead in an alternate dimension with talking flowers and really good looking cake. I loved watching Disney movies. They taught values yes. They also sometimes had other meanings. That’s true, but what doesn’t, right?

So here, I’ll just present the works of Dante Tyler, he drew these and I am absolutely giddy. Alot of people actually saw this already but then I’ll explain why it’s so special to me.

Every character, every Disney princess had an impact on me.

So first, Ariel. To give a brief background (though I highly doubt that you don’t know her. If you don’t then you live under a rock). Ariel was the daughter of the King Merman, Triton but she didn’t really like being a mermaid so she made a bargain to make her human for 3 days so she can find love and that guy should kiss her to prove his love. If not then the sea witch, Ursula– she’s actually an octopus or a squid– will get Ariel’s voice and Ariel will be Ursula’s sea urchin. So in Little Mermaid 1 and 2 everything works out.

So Ariel, till now reminds me how much I love the sea. I mean she wanted to be human but even in the 2nd one she can’t stop the call of the sea (even before Melody went away). With me, it’s the call of the pool. I love swimming. I know I can’t live without it.

The second one is Aurora. Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) was the daughter of King Stephan and was betrothed to Prnce Philip but finds herself in love with a man she met in the woods, not knowing it was Philip or her he not knowing that it was Aurora. She was destined to prick the spindle of a spinning wheel on her 16th birthday. So before the night was over she was returned to the royal family but then one way or another Maleficent was able to trick her into pricking her finger so she sleeps eternally. Prince Philip finds her soon with the help of the fairy godparents, defeats Maleficent and restores order to the kingdom and unites the 2 families.

So Aurora always reminded me of what it is like to have someone to love you and someone to rescue you from the cuffs of evil. SO technically, it can’t happen in real life but I know that there is someone out there for me, to be my prince Philip! Okay, I’m thinking like my 7 year old self so I love aurora because I founder her to be prettiest among all. After Mulan she and Pocahontas are tied at 2nd place. Mulan isn’t here because she’s not a princess :( Regardless, she is still my favorite because she was strong and Asian.

Next is Belle. Belle’s story is so complicated it’s hard to fully tell it without having to go on and on. So I will just say that Belle makes the decision to love the Beast and not Gaston because even is everyone loves Gaston, he’s a jerk. The beast was also a jerk but he changed. Plus to me what I loved most in this story was that, when Belle saved the Beast and the Beast transformed to a human, he may have been ugly but then he was apparently more handsome than Gaston.

So I like this story because it shows us that we have to look beneath the surface to see the person as a whole. Basically that’s what I liked about this story and the fact that if you download the HQ of this, the scenery is so beautiful. Plus, Chip, the teacup, is so cute! So is Mrs. Potts!

The next is Cinderella. What I liked about Cinderella was the fairy godmother was really nice and that in the later installments of Cinderella, the sister, Anastasia, changed to someone better. Cinderella got an evils stepmother because her father remarried and then died soon after. This therefore, left her with an evil stepmother and 2 evil step sisters. She does get her happily ever after with the help of mice.

I can actually say that this isn’t my favorite sketch but then I still love the fact that the made one of her. Cinderella was like the girl I didn’t want to be because she seemed to have hands of a scullery maid already and that isn’t nice. I liked the story though because Cinderella never stopped trying to get out, to tell the truth and to do what she wants. Kinda rebel if you think about it.

After Cinderella comes Jasmine. Jasmine is the Arabian princess that fell for a street rat, Aladdin who pretended to be Prince Ali. Jasmine was very determined with not wanting to get married just because it was a good match. She wanted to be free from her duties but all she had to do was show to her father that she wanted someone for love not just for the kingdom even if he was street rat. They had to go through all the troubles of defeating Jafar to show that they want to be free to make their own decisions.

What I like about Jasmine was that she knew what she wanted. That’s something that I have to learn to do, to actually know what I want. I mean now, I’m in college and I’m studying for an Economics degree, it’s a good future but then I’m not sure if that’s really what I want. I have to learn to make sure of what I want.

After Jasmine is Pocahontas. Pocahontas is actually a real person. I didn’t know that until about a few months ago. She didn’t want bloodshed between the native Americans and the British. She practiced diplomacy and when no one would listen to her and her father the chief of the tribe was going to kill John Smith she put her life on the line to save a man. If she hadn’t then that would have probably started a really bloody battle between the Brits and the native Americans.

SO Pocahontas like I said earlier was in my number 2 position and tied with Aurora for my list of favorites. I like her because before Mulan, she was actually the only strong female figure in the Disney princesses and that did not need the rescue of a man. It’s a very feminist idea actually :) That’s why I like her. Plus he clothes and pets are awesome.

The 2nd to the last is Snow White. She had an evil stepmother who wanted to kill her but then wasn’t able to do so and lives with dwarfs but then gets poisoned by an apple that her stepmother gave to her disguised as an old crone. Then the prince finds her and kissed her even if she was dead then she wakes up.

Snow White was my least favorite Disney princess but then I really like this cover. I mean it made Snow White look more appealing. What I really don’t like in Snow White was that she was already dead. I understand Sleeping Beauty because she was asleep but then Snow White was dead! Still, I have to pay my respects to the oldest Disney princess there is!

Lastly is the youngest Disney princess, Tiana. So she was the daughter of a seamstress in the South and she gets turned to a frog but then chooses to spend her life as a frog when the guy that she loved wasn’t able to turn human. Loophole, when they got married they were able to turn human again because he married her and therefore she became a princess.

So what I like about the last installment in the Disney princesses was that Tiana was the only not European and non white princess. She was black and was from the US, Southern Alabama if I’m correct. Or is it some where else? So it was very nice, thought some people didn’t like it that much but I liked it. What I liked about this one was the the girl was the one who was able to do the saving. She saved the prince from being a frog forever. So yay for them!

So basically since they released this, I felt that the Disney princess that I watched growing up are growing up with me. How many people can say that with the cartoons that they watched growing up, huh? Okay so before dragging on even longer I’d like to end this the way Disney has always ended it.

And they all lived happily ever after!

The End.
